“They’re a terrific side, they’ve got all bases covered and
some serious match-winners,” Smith said after his 57 from 48 balls. “They’ve
all been playing in these conditions the last couple of months with the IPL
(Indian Premier League). So they’ll be used to that.”
Australia bowlers were only able to capture one wicket.
Spinner Ashton Ager removed India opener, Lokesh Rahul, for 39 runs. Rohit Sharma
retired after a 41-ball 60 to allow Hardik Pandya to play. Pandya scored 19
runs and went not out with Suryakumar Yadav 38 not out. All-rounder Marcus Stoinis
bowled for the first time after his hamstring injury in the Indian Premier
League. Stoinis concede 16 runs from his 2 overs.
The poor form of David Warner remains a major concern for Australia
after he got lbw from Ravichandran Ashwin for 1 run. Warner was dropped from
Sunrisers Hyderabad due to his poor batting form. Warner has only managed three
runs from his last four innings.
Aaron Finch also struggled with his batting partner David
Warner but only scored 8 runs. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh batting at number
three went duck by Ashwin on the first ball. Steve Smith partnered with Glenn
Maxwell (37) and Stoinis (41 not out) to give Australia a good total.
The former skipper was glad to get runs after being barely used by Delhi Capitals on the IPL’s resumption in the United Arab Emirates. “I feel like I’ve been hitting the ball really well,” he said.
“I haven’t played too many games in the IPL but I’ve spent a lot of time in the nets, working on things and getting used to conditions.”
Australia will play their World Cup opener against South Africa in Abu Dhabi on Saturday (October 23).
