Matsuyama fell one strike after the first round of the game, the total score of the two rounds was 132.8 under par. In the latter part of the second round, the temperature dropped to 12 degrees Celsius (53 degrees Fahrenheit).

Cameron Tringale birdied the last Hole and shot 66, finishing in second place. Matt Wallace birdied the last three holes and shot 69, British Open tied for third with Brendale Steele (68) and 2 strokes behind Matsuyama.

Joaquin Nieman opened with 64 and 71, tied for fifth and three shots behind.

"It's tough, I don't feel my hands and it's really cold," Nieman said as he bogeyed the first two holes.

Matsuyama shot the shot of the day from the rough grass on the 8th Hole (his 17th hole) on Friday. His low shot was about 20 yards from the club, then saw his birdie drift just right, into his final hole. Left another birdie to keep him short.

Two days ago, at his pre-match media conference, Matsuyama was still announcing his strong performance despite recent mediocre results.

"If I scored 10 points in the Master's match, I would now say it scored less than 1 point," he said. "I'm going to have a hard time this week, but I'm in Japan, so I'm motivated to participate in the competition."

Hiroshi Iwata, who led by one shot after the first round, just missed the eagle push on the 18th hole and birdied for 73, four shots behind Matsuyama.

British Open champion Collin Morikawa shot 68, 7 shots behind.

Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele played in the same group at Matsuyama, shooting 74, 12 shots behind the Japanese star.

Only three of the top 20 players in the world played in Chiba, the only Asian swing on the PGA Tour.
