British Open 2022: The home field gives Collin Morikawa benefit in CJ Cup

Collin Morikawa had an extraordinary 2021 season on the PGA Tour. He won the British Open, won the World Golf Championship, played in the winning Ryder Cup team, and placed third in the world rankings. Not good sufficient for Las Vegas occupant. He said; I can't, you know, I can't be satisfied as he is ready for his CJ Cup entrance this week, I always want to keep aggressive myself, right.  I want to keep getting better and I think there is still a lot of room for development.

For other players on the tour, this is a terrible proposition. Morikawa, 24, has just graduated from college for two years and has racked up five wins, including two majors, and more than $7 million in professional earnings.

But Morikawa said he is not stable enough and not a very good player. His putting, cutting, and general shots could always be better.

Morikawa saw Jon Rahm or Rory McIlroy a few years ago as what he wanted to be last season.

This is where I want my game to be because it means I can travel every week. Be prepared without breaking things having to repair everywhere," he said.

This week's travel isn't a problem for Morikawa unless you count the 10-minute drive from his Summerlin home to his home stadium, The Summit Club. Most of them have never seen the ground before this week, this gives him a big benefit over 78 other players.

"There's a sense of comfort," he said of the game at The Summit, a spectacular stadium designed by Tom Fazio, hidden in red rocks overlooking the Las Vegas Strip. I'm happy with a lot of tee shots and I'm also happy with the method. I know where the green breaks. I know where I'm missing shots."

He said this doesn't mean he will play well, but clearly, he has a good chance of winning.

It becomes clear that the golf course itself doesn't have that sense of urgency, during the pro/amateur game, Tuesday or tomorrow, I'm ready."

The CJ Cup was his first competition since the Ryder Cup. Players from these teams all showed the consequences of the match. Last week's Shriners Children's Open saw six Ryder Cup golfers in attendance; four missed promotion and the other two played no part.
