RWC 2023: I have confidence in this thrilling group, Spain coach Santos before of historic meeting with Romania

Next year will be 24 years since the Spanish men took part in the Rugby World Cup, but if they can maintain their recent good form, a journey to France is quiet within the spread. Nothing could make current head coach Santiago Santos happier than foremost his country to the Rugby World Cup 2023. Rugby Fans can buy France Rugby World Cup Tickets from our website.

But the seasoned coach, now 60, who has been in his current role since 2013, has been around the box often enough, never too high or too low: he knows it's always the same as down.

He didn't sink too deep when he lost the first three games of Euro 2021 to Georgia, Romania and Portugal, and he didn't catch up in the recent Euro 2022 games against the Netherlands and Russia to win.

The points from the 2021 and 2022 championships will be individual at the end of March, with the highest two going conventional to the Rugby World Cup 2023 and third place qualifying for the final later this year.

Spain is currently third in the general classification in seven out of ten matches, behind Romania (22 points) in second place and leader Georgia (31 points).

They are only one point late Romania, which makes Sunday's encounter at Madrid's Central UCM Stadium (12:45 local time, 11:45 GMT) very important and interesting.

Keeping the focus on what's ahead

"We know there is more rugby to play and our only focus at the moment is the coming game against Romania and are already well-positioned to attain our target of qualifying for the Rugby World Cup 2023," said Santos.

“They have enhanced in many different aspects of the game since Andy Robinson took over as manager of the Romanian team, and we expect this weekend to be very difficult.

"The support we have received from the Spanish rugby crowd at this point has been excellent and we wanted to give them somewhat to excite them, while we are at home we should try to use it to our benefit.

“I have great confidence in this stimulating group of players who have been playing in the national team now and for the past year, and every time we are at training camp together I try to keep effective them to consider in themselves.

"Who is now hitting composed in 80 minutes of performances that confidence is increasing and growing among the players and not knowing when they will be compressed."

This fighting prowess was evident in Spain's most recent match, when Spain and Russia faced each other at Sochi's Yug Stadium on February 12.

The match went back and forth - and evenly - from the first minute when the penalty from Spain's Manuel Ordas made it 34-30 with nine minutes to go.

Substitute Vitaly Zhivatov tried on the left and Ramil Gaisin improved for a 37-32 lead for Russia.

Over time, however, Santiago Ovejero, Spain's back up front row, changed for Spain's winning effort, leaving Russia behind after losing 41-37 and losing just one extra point to prove their efforts.
