Wasps’ offensive coach John Mitchell will join Japan's coaching staff in training for the Rugby World Cup 2023 in France. New Zealander John Mitchell will start an effort as a defensive coach in Japan in May, combining that with the coaching responsibilities of Wasps.

Before joining the Wasps, former All Blacks manager Mitchell was England's defensive coach from 2018 to 2021.

Mitchell signs a two-and-a-half-year agreement delay with England in February 2021 but told Eddie Jones after two months that he coveted to leave Test rugby.

Mitchell will join forces with the Brave Blossoms from May as they training for the Rugby World Cup in 2023, hoping to build on their recent event achievements.

In July, his departure from England was confirmed and he was named the Wasps attacking coach - a role he will continue to fulfil while also obligations for Japan.

Reports of rumours of a feud with Eddie Jones were the reason for his sudden U-turn. However, in an interview in December, Mitchell was deprived of the claims and said he maintains a deep friendship with the Australian.

He said the reason he left England was that he "appreciated his life, not just winning the World Cup".

"I'm already responsibility for with the Wasps, agreeing on me to combine this part with the work, I feel like to thank Lee Blackett and the club for working together," said Mitchell.

"As they love their defence and see how it can play a key role in how we want to attack, it’s a great chance to add value to winning exhibition games in Japan."
