The Irish Open has declared a main new sponsor, securing its place as one of the premier mid-summer events on the DP World Tour. Horizon Therapeutics, a Dublin-based global biotech company, will be the title sponsor from this year's event in Mount Juliet from June 30 to July 3. Critically, the prize money will reach $6 million - more than 75% higher than last year's €3 million - and the new sponsor has signed them on a six-year contract.

After three years as a Rolex series from 2017-2019, the Irish Open has lost some of its lustre in recent seasons.

Long-term sponsor Dubai Duty-Free agreed to sponsor the event in 2021, but no sponsor was confirmed when the Irish Open was confirmed on the DP World Tour calendar last November.

This year's event takes place two weeks before the 150th British Open in St Andrews and a week before the Scottish Open, which is considered a key warm-up for the Open.

Former Championship host Rory McIlroy said two weeks ago that he wasn't sure if he would play the Irish Open this summer, but organizers hope the tournament will now be a game-changer for DP and PGA Tour golfers. Hands generate more attraction.

There are no strategies to reinstate it to elite Rolex series status, but it should thrive in other ways as it is part of a new contract between the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour in a strategic alliance announced last year negotiated.
