Townsend planned the Lions attack in the 2021 South Africa Tour and Farrell joined the team as a defensive coach in the 2017 New Zealand Tour and the 2013 Australia Tour.

Farrell and Townsend have signed a contract with their national team ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2023, meaning that if they decide not to renew the current deal, this combination will be taken into account.
