Winning the Premier League title and reaching the UEFA Champions League final helped City generate €644 million in business revenue for the 2020/21 season, a 17% increase from a year earlier, according to a KPMG consultant. The figure includes broadcasts, match days and commercial revenue.

In a report, KPMG said Manchester United were the highest-earning club in the league's history, with a turnover of €557 million in the same period. The team has won a record 13 titles since the retirement of head coach Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 but has been unable to break the record since 2013.

After UEFA's leading body projected European clubs would miss out on £9bn in 2019-20, the City's rise was enhanced with the selection of manager Pep Guardiola in 2016, who led the team to three titles in five years, and gains euros 2020-21 quarters.

Manchester City transported €129.5 million for UEFA and reached the Champions League final last season, according to KPMG.

The pandemic has disrupted football's finances and with matches played in full stadiums, United is likely to regain its revenue dominance this year.

KPMG Football Benchmarks will not disclose City's personnel costs, profit and loss figures but will provide a preview of the club's finances before the accounts are released in the coming days, a person close to the club said. KPMG said the facts were decided by Manchester City. New York-listed United has released its accounts for the 12 months ended June 30 last year.

Generally, City's broadcast incomes rose 55% to €335.5 million, KPMG figures show, although that figure is too high as some games have been moved from last season to 2020/21.

As games are largely played in empty stadiums due to the pandemic, the recovery in broadcast revenue has helped to offset almost the entire loss of revenue on matchdays. Manchester United suffered excessively as the ground grips about 20,000 more persons than City's 55,000-seat stadium.

Commercial incomes in the city rose by 8% to EUR 307.9 million. The club has been owned since 2008 by billionaire Abu Dhabi royal family Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan. The club is owned by an Abu Dhabi-based company.  Other partners include German sportswear group Puma, Etihad Airways, and telecommunications company Etisalat.

United's commercial incomes fell nearly 17% year-on-year to £232.2 million in the 12 months to June, with some sponsors delaying payments due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the team has signed tech company Team Viewer as the shirt's title sponsor, extending several deals.

United noted the club's "strength and resilience" during the pandemic, "despite a significant loss of revenue from normal levels of games behind closed doors".
