Wales fit to play for Rugby World Cup 2023, speaks Coach Wayne Pivac

Wales boss Wayne Pivac declares he wants Alun Wyn Jones to play in the Rugby World Cup 2023. Jones, 36, in the second row, will become the first player in the world to make 150 caps for his country when Wales face Italy on Saturday. Next year's World Cup in France will be the fifth in the illustrious career of the England and Ireland captain of the Lions. Rugby Fans can buy Rugby World Cup 2023 Tickets from our website.

"I expect so because we've signed him so far. Other than an injury, I've never had any doubts," said Wales’s manager Wayne Pivac.

"Of course, he has to stay in shape and has options. Of course, he and I both understand that that is his goal, that is his goal, and of course, we discussed it."

If he can pull that off, world record holder Jones will celebrate his 38th birthday at the 2023 Global Championship.

His next big milestone comes when Wales host Italy in the final game of the Six Nations this year.

For the second time in less than a year, the veteran challenged medical forecasts for an initial return to the game.

He captained the Lions in the Test series against South Africa last summer after quickly overcoming a shoulder injury.

After suffering another shoulder problem in Wales' autumn test against New Zealand five months ago - he had to undergo two surgeries - many predictions suggest Jones may efforts to play again this season.

But he is back and ready to win his 150th Welsh match in his 12 Lions Tests, expanding his world cap to 162 international appearances.

"He has been with us for a few weeks and we have been watching him. He has trained well and meets all the requirements," said Pivac.

"Playing 150 Test matches, which is something no one else on the planet has done, shows that he is a special person. We think he is someone who can come back like he was in the past."

In Jones' missing, half-flyer Dan Biggar captains Wales to the Six Nations, who lost their penultimate match in 2022 to Grand Slam chasing France on Friday.

Biggar remains captain and will make his 100th arrival for Wales against Italy.

Pivac said the choice for Jones and Biggar was "definitely" not an emotional decision, even as Wales lost three of their four games on Saturday.

"Certainly there is no word from the marketing department of the WRU [Welsh Rugby Union]," the New Zealander added.

"I think it's going to add extra bum to the seat, and I think we're going to have a sold-out crowd to recognize Dan and Alun Wynn's achievements, which no one else on the planet has done.

"It's something special to have two people reach these milestones on the same day. It's a rugby decision, it's something we decided and we are very happy with that decision."
