Fiji-born Pita Gus Sowakula supported No.8 for All Blacks for Rugby World Cup 2023

Fiji-born No. 8 Pita Gus Sowakula has been flaunted as an All Blacks player after an astral start to the Super Rugby Pacific game with the Chiefs. Sowakula, 27, has attracted attention more than once since 2017 when he played for the Chiefs and Taranaki at the National Provincial Championships. But so far, his game has risen to another level in 2022, which has been instrumental in the Chiefs' success as they kick off their Super Rugby Pacific campaign.

Sowakula set another marker on Saturday when the Chiefs defeated the Crusaders 24-21 in Christchurch, with 21 runs in the 60m and eight tackles on defence.

Having previously said he plans to represent New Zealand in his native Fiji, Sowakula time in black may be upon us as the All Blacks compete for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

In Sky Sports' The Breakdown, All Blacks legend Sir John Kirwan gave Sowakula his full support, saying he must be with the All Blacks as soon as possible so he can pass the rugby test until 2023.

"My problem is, yes, because Akira Ioane was injured, he brought a different type of participant," Sir John said.

"I like how robust he is, but we still have 18 tests to go until the Rugby World Cup 2023 and when can we say, okay, we have to be on our side? When do we let him in?"

"I'd like to understand him, he's definitely going to be controversial if he keeps playing like because he's a little moment different."

Referee Ben O'Keeffe also added support for Sowakula's roster to the All Blacks, observing his development on his already imposing resume with the Chiefs through 2022.

We have good backline players and we need people to actually choose.

"I've been referee with him for a few years now and I've never seen him run as fast with the ball as now, and I've never seen him challenges as tough as in the last few games.

"He's certainly a candidate, he's definitely one of the best players right now."

Sowakula isn't the only foreign-born player to earn an All Blacks berth in 2022, with Highlanders Tongan centre-back Folau Fakatava making it clear he sees his future as black.
