Eddie Jones believes he can supervise England revival at Rugby World Cup 2023
Eddie Jones asserted he is still the man to turn England's fate around in the run-up to next year's World Cup after an unsatisfactory Six Nations loss by Grand Slam champions France. A 25-13 turnaround at Saturday's gritty Stade de France meant England - one of rugby's most resourceful nations - lost three out of five games in the championship for the second year in a row. It would come as a huge
surprise if his employers in England's ruling rugby union were to fire Jones so
close to a global achievement.
Am I satisfied with the work
I do? Jones said on Sunday: "I'm not happy with the decisions.
"Do I like my coach?
One hundred per cent. I like my coach, but occasionally you don't get
consequences."
But Jones was asked if there
was time for England to revive before World Cup 2023 in France, and he replied:
"One hundred per cent."
Forced into his position,
Jones was humbly looking before England's tour of his native Australia in July.
"My only concern is to
prepare for Australia, and my apprehension is to coach the team well," he
said.
Rebuilding
Jones was Australia's coach
and led England to the top of Japan in 2019, beating South Africa 32-12 in the
2003 World Cup final in his hometown of Sydney.
Much of the squad went on to
help England win the 2020 Six Nations - a third title in the Jones era, starting
with the 2016 Grand Slam. But the coach insists a new team is needed now.
"After the 2019 World
Cup it appropriated them three years to win the Six Nations Championship, Look
at France.
"We've renovated this
squad from the previous Six Nations," added Jones, after England finished
third, compared to fifth last year.
"I'm very happy about
the predictions of this team, I consider the development is very
positive."
England was beaten 3-1 by
France, however, with just eight attempts in total linked to Les Bleus' 17 in
the Six Nations.
"We certainly need to
increase our assists, we need to progress our ending," Jones said.
"They were in our 22
five times, but their performance rate was 80%. Our implemented rate was about
45% - that's the change in the scoreline. I hope the judgment of our team going
to the World Cup is very good."
But Jones added that rookie
central defenders like Harry Randall and Marcus Smith would develop a lot in
the Rugby World Cup.
