Spain's position in Rugby World Cup 2023 in suspicion
Spain's place at the Rugby World Cup 2023 in France is uncertain as it is under-examined for sending an unqualified player. Spain qualified for the second Rugby World Cup on March 13, they're first since 1999. Rugby World Cup Fans can buy Rugby World Cup 2023 Tickets from our website.
"The World Rugby Association has become
aware of possible irregularities by a member of the Spanish national senior
team. Following the completion of an initial investigation, the International
Federation deems a formal independent assessment necessary. Rugby Union has
fully cooperated with the initial investigation."
The comment is said to refer to South
African-born front-row player Gavin Van der berg. He prepared his entrance on
December 18, when Spain defeated the Netherlands 52-7 at the Rugby European
Championship in Amsterdam, which also served as a World Cup qualifier. Van der
berg came on in the second half and scored.
He was again a substitute in the second half
on February 5 when the Netherlands were defeated 43-0 in Madrid.
Van der berg reached Spain in 2018 and had to
live there for three years to get a Spanish nationality before making his debut
on December 18. But he supposedly returned to South Africa for four months in
2019 during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.
This is the second time in a row that Spain
has been embroiled in controversy during a World Cup qualifier. In 2018, Spain,
Romania and Belgium were sanctioned for sending ineligible players, while
Russia advanced to the 2019 World Cup in Japan.
