British Open 2022: Sir Bob Charles Former British Open Champion Emerges at New Hickory Open Golf Event
The great Sir Charles took his father's 100-year-old cue to the inaugural New Zealand Hickory Open, and it was without a doubt one of the best. "There's a little bit
of everything, the good and the bad and the ugly," he joked Sunday morning
after a foursome at home.
Hickory sticks are not very
forgiving and if you get it wrong you won't get any results."
Charles
"surprises" himself by leading the longest teeing category on the
morning of the 18th hole on Shirley Course, of which he has been a lifelong
member. "I must have hit about 245 yards and I'm very happy with
that."
On Monday, the eve of his
86th birthday, Charles kept six clubs in his Hickory-era canvas bag. Both clubs
belonged to his late father, Ivor, who was born in 1909 and started playing
golf "with pecans" as a teenager at the Hororata Club in Canterbury.
Sir Bob reserved the middle
irons and mashie but hired a different hickory putter and driver.
They got into the spirit of
the event, including Charles wearing a "Harris tweed jacket, cardigan,
long sleeve shirt, tie and cloth cap from Highgrove", the Prince of
Wales's stately home in Gloucestershire.
Charles raced in a 1922
chauffeur-driven Ford Model T and set up spikes "probably for the first
time in 30 years".
Much of the grounds use
tackle from Christchurch Hickory Golf Club collector and restorer Stu Upton,
who hosted the tournament with former Christchurch Golf Club captain Glenn
Bongartz.
