Each year, the R&A asks members of the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) to help organize the event. Any full BIGGA member who has been with the association for at least two years is eligible for a spot on the Volunteer Open Support Team, and the selected individuals will have an incredible opportunity to win the largest golf championship to break the sands of any tournament to support Pit rake duties.

The history of the Volunteer Open support team initiated in St Andrews in 1984, after years of criticisms from golfers and governing bodies that the Open bunker field was inconsistent. Walter Woods BEM, then head of St Andrews, suggested that members of the Scottish and International Association of Golf Greenkeepers (SIGGA), which existed before BIGGA's creation in 1987, be recruited on a volunteer basis.

Having a trained greenkeepers crew on-site can also provide additional support to the home greenkeepers team if needed. The Volunteer Open Support Team was formed and has played at every Open since, creating incredible memories for hundreds of BIGGA members and inspiring them to achieve more in their careers and home facilities.

Gordon Moir, president of BIGGA 2022, himself a former link director at St Andrews and an industry veteran who oversaw five Open tournaments, will join the BIGGA volunteers. Gordon kicks off the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME) at the Harrogate Convention Center from March 22-24.

“The 150th British Open is going to be one big golfing celebration and in some ways, the Open Volunteer Support Team is recognizing centuries of greens,” said Jim Croxton, CEO of BIGGA. Greenkeepers have played an important role in the growth and prosperity of this wonderful game, so we thank The R&A for providing this opportunity to BIGGA members every year. The Open is the biggest golf tournament in the world and it will be the biggest and best ever. Andrews’s greens team - looking forward to hosting the tournament."

This year's BIGGA Volunteer Open Support Team has a record number of new team members and provides accommodation, housing and uniforms for the event each year. As restrictions are likely to apply due to the coronavirus pandemic, any necessary adjustments to working practices will be made clear to BIGGA members prior to the tournament.

The 150th British Open will be held from 10-17 July 2022. Registrations for the BIGGA Volunteer Open Support Team for the Royal Liverpool 151st Open will open later this year.
