Before Rugby World Cup 2023 RFU intends to name English successor to Eddie Jones
The Rugby Football Union chief executive Bill Sweeney plans to name Eddie Jones' England successor, effectively ruling out a bid for Warren Gatland or the move by popular overseas replacements such as Rassie Erasmus. Sweeney has supported Jones - whose contract runs until the Rugby World Cup 2023. Rugby World Cup Fans can buy Rugby World Cup 2023 Tickets from our website
Sweeney also exposed that
the union had set up a "war room" to assess the identifications of
all British coaches working at home and abroad. While Andy Farrell and Shaun
Edwards are in the latter category, the move seems difficult for the two
coaches as their intent is to book for next year's World Cup when they will be
plunged into Ireland and France respectively.
The RFU's standards are best
suited to the likes of Steve Borthwick, former assistant to Jones and manager
of Leicester City, who top the Premiership.
Erasmus has recently spoken
interest in the part after next year's Rugby World Cup, and former Lions and
Wales manager Gatland is seen by many as an ideal candidate. However, Sweeney
explained that the RFU plans to go the home-based route and has not advanced
New Zealanders about the work.
“As a leading rugby country,
we trust we have such a wealth of British coaches in the game,” said Sweeney.
", an English style of play and we should develop English coaches. It has
to be for the long term, so in my opinion, an English setting is preferable. We
have a war room with everything you can visualize. Every English coach in our
team - is based here and internationally. We have implemented advanced series
planning."
While Sweeney will finally
be accountable for the nomination, Conor O'Shea, the RFU's performance
director, will work closely with Nigel Redman, who has held positions
throughout the Olympic movement. The experience of coaching successors. O'Shea
quoted Fabien Galthié being named as Jacques Brunel's successor in April 2019
and taking over the French coaching staff after the World Cup in Japan next
month.
“We have time to embed the
new coaching staff so that the basis is that we need agreements and get them to
work. Eddie is perfectly clear and knows what we want to do. World Cup will
disrupt because people look back. Galthié was selected for the 2019 World Cup,
and that is the right choice as we have to prepare for the Six Nations in
2024."
Sweeney said Jones'
successor should preferably be a less contentious figure, but deprived of that
Jones had completely lost support from England fans and defended his decision
to publish a book this year criticizing the ball publicly. Maro Itoje and Ollie
Lawrence. Jones also inscribed that Sweeney "must trust me because if
you've never coached a top sport, how can you tell a head coach he's
wrong?"
Sweeney said: "Every
fan in the country loves so much that If you can make your enlightenment you
have a coach. He has a legacy in 17 different counties so they will love him in
Yorkshire. They will love him in Cornwall that’s great you don't always get
that.
"His understanding and
the upgrading of the organization Gareth Southgate has been bizarre for the FA.
As for the fans, I wouldn't completely wipe Eddie out. I know he's provocative
and he's much separated, but I'm not doing it." I don't think every
supporter in this nation hates him.
