Ryder Cup 2023: Kevin Kisner's playing power won't lead to Ryder Cup

Kevin Kisner was certainly disappointed not to be named to his first U.S. Ryder Cup team following his Wyndham Championship win last fall. Scottie Scheffler was one of those fighting for the last spot on Steve Stricker's team. Scheffler was eventually selected for the team that defeated Europe in Whistling Straits in September. Both are off to a good start in their quest to join Zach Johnson's captaincy at Roma next year. Kisner topped the US team's rankings released Tuesday, followed by Scheffler.

The day before, Scheffler rose to world No. 1 by beating Kisner in the final with his win in the WGC-Dell matchplay. Scheffler has three wins in 2022, while Kisner has finished in the top 10 four times in eight races this year and is number 27 in the world.

Kisner went 16-6-2 in match play last week, including a win in 2019, and built on that resume with six more wins before finishing with a 16-1 in Sunday's 3-1 loss to Scheffler. After a few close wins, Kisner told the Under-Par podcast in January that the Ryder Cup trial was "too political for me".

"I don't know, man. I guess they don't like me," Kisner said on the podcast.

"Almost every captain made the same decision about four times in a row (in the Ryder Cup).”Man, you're on the team and then you don't do well in the play-offs. "Okay, dude.

Dustin Johnson became the fifth player to go 5-0-0 in the Ryder Cup last year and is third in the current U.S. standings after Austin finished fourth. They are followed by Keegan Bradley and Harold Varner III, who took their biggest career win yet in Saudi Arabia last month.

In the early Ryder Cup team rankings, the top 10 was dominated by Doug Ghim, Brooks Koepka, Max Homa, Will Zalatoris, Keith Mitchell and Daniel Berger. Homa and Berger finished in a tie for tenth place.

Spaniard Jon Rahm, who topped the world rankings for 36 consecutive weeks this week, led the European Ryder Cup rankings. They were followed by Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrrell Hatton from England, Bernd Wiesberger from Austria and Matthew Fitzpatrick from England. Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland is currently sixth.

The next Ryder Cup 2023 will be held on September 25, 2023, at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome.

Kisner will make his first attempt at the team in almost February - he turns 38 in February - although he seems to have accepted his willingness to miss the event again.
