The 62-year-old Colombian was a defender during his playing days and won the Copa Libertadores in 1989 with Atletico Nacional.

Ten years later, the Medellin-based club was also his first step into management. He was immediately impressed by leading the club to a title.

Luis Fernando Suarez was later named Ecuador’s head coach and led the Ecuadorian team to their best-ever World Cup result in 2006, achieving hero status in his home country.

The South Americans defeated Poland and Costa Rica. But lost to Germany to finish second in their group and advance to the round of 16. There they met England, where David Beckham’s free kick tied their match at 1-1. Closed. 0 defeats.

Suarez resigned after a poor start to the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. But took over from Honduras in 2011, returning to international football.

He led the Central American nation to a second consecutive World Cup qualifier in 2014, ahead of Mexico in automatic qualifiers.

However, Honduras suffered a crushing defeat to Brazil, finishing bottom of the group. After losing all three of their group matches to France, Switzerland and former Suarez club Ecuador.

The manager retired after disappointment but returned to the Costa Rica international squad last year after playing for clubs in Peru, Mexico and Colombia.

Suarez led Los Ticos to fourth place in CONCACAF qualifiers, behind Canada, Mexico and the United States. They then faced an interleague play-off against New Zealand, winning 1-0 in Qatar in June thanks to an early goal from Joel Campbell.

The Colombian made some big decisions in this high-stakes game, making three changes during halftime in a bid to clear the All-Whites threat.

“We had to change at halftime to have more possession and a five-man defence. That turned out to be the key,” he said later.

Costa Rica’s head coach is now tasked with leading the country to a third consecutive World Cup as they look to recreate the exploits of 2014 when they reached the quarter-finals with stunning results.

Los Ticos will take on Germany, Spain and Japan in Qatar’s Group E, with Suarez hoping his Costa Rica World Cup squad will result in one or two disruptions.

Keylor Navas, Bryan Ruiz, and Celso Borges get another FIFA World Cup chance

SAN JOSE: Three of Costa Rica’s best players will score their last goal together at the Football World Cup playing.

Goalkeeper Keylor Navas, striker Bryan Ruiz and midfielder Celso Borges were all part of a team. That reached the quarter-finals at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which qualified again in 2018.

Ruiz, 37, has said he will end his career with the national team after this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Along with Navas, 35, and Borges, 34, Ruiz led Costa Rica to its best World Cup finish in Brazil. The team led a group that included Italy, Uruguay and England before beating Greece on penalties in the round of 16.

Costa Rica boss Luis Fernando Suarez has said Ruiz, who underperformed in qualifying, will be in his squad because of his leadership over the years.

Difficult group

In Qatar, Costa Rica again had a difficult draw, in Group E with Spain, Germany and Japan.

Ticos will face Spain on November 23 and Japan four days later. The last game of the group stage is on December 1 against the Germans.

“The most important thing for me is that all our players fully understand the skills of our opponents,” said Suarez.

“Spain has the ball, Japan has the breadth and Germany have the strength.”

Suarez, 62, has had previous World Cup experience. The Colombian coach led Ecuador to the 2006 championship and Honduras to the 2014 championship. He is expected to remain Costa Rica’s coach for the next four years.

The Future

Costa Rica is likely to bring some new faces to Qatar, including 18-year-old midfielder Brandon Aguilera (recently signed by Nottingham Forest) and Sunderland winger Jewison Bennette.

Suarez brought the latter into the national team before even playing in the National League.

It was Bennette who sent the cross that Joel Campbell scored to give Costa Rica the only goal of their international play-off win over New Zealand.

Costa Rica will play their sixth World Cup in Qatar. The team qualified in 1990, 2002 and 2006 before reaching the final two with Navas, Ruiz and Borges.
