Ecuador's Qatar World Cup place is under threat as FIFA tries to intervene after a complaint about Chile

FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against Ecuador for using a supposedly ineligible player in World Cup qualifiers, endangering their place in Qatar. Byron Castillo has represented Ecuador in eight World Cup qualifiers, including a goalless draw with Chile on September 5 and a subsequent 2-0 win on November 17. World Football's governing body said: "As recently confirmed by FIFA, the Chilean Football Association has filed a complaint with FIFA's Disciplinary Committee, raising a series of allegations regarding the possible falsification of documents granting Ecuadorian citizenship to player Byron David Castillo Segura, and the player may not qualify for the Ecuadorian Football Federation's (FEF) national team's eight qualifying matches for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in Qatar.”

“In view of the above, FIFA has decided to initiate disciplinary proceedings regarding the possible exclusion of Byron David Castillo Segura from the above competition.

"In this case, the FEF and the Peruvian Football Federation have been invited to present their views to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee."

The Chilean Football Federation claims that Castillo was born in Colombia and not in Ecuador, as its documents state.

Due to "countless evidence" and "information and documents," Chile said FIFA should investigate the matter ahead of the World Cup later this year.

Ecuador qualified for this year's World Cup in March, finishing fourth in the CONMEBOL group, ahead of Chile, Colombia, and Peru.

In September 2016, FIFA penalized Bolivia for fielding unfit player Nelson Cabrera in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Chile, who went on to win 3-0. Bolivia was also penalized. If Ecuador were punished the same, Chile would take its place in the contest.
