Vikings vs Saints: It’s time for record with some game-by-game forecasts for the Minnesota Vikings’ 2022 season. The football season is here. As the Vikings begin their 2022 campaign against the Packers on Sunday, it’s time to record my game-by-game predictions for the first season of the Kevin O’Connell era. Will this age be bad? Perhaps. But I’m going to try anyway.
Let’s get started.
Week 1 vs. Packers: Win (1-0)
It’s hard to be overconfident when you pick the Vikings to defeat Aaron Rodgers and his company, but I think they pull it off in the opener. The Vikings are healthy, the U.S. Bank Stadium will rock and their advantage at wide receiver could offset their disadvantage at quarterback. The O’Connell era began with a win that fueled optimism in Minnesota.
Eagles Week 2: Loss (1-1)
Monday night football in a hostile road environment against what could be the best team in the NFC? It’s a tough sell. The Hawks gave Jalen Hurts a No. 1 receiver this offseason with A.J. Brown, and they have a lot of defence for James Bradberry, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Jordan Davis and Kyzir White added a lot of talent. They look like potential contenders. Kirk Cousins will not shake the multinational force’s story in this one.
Week 3 vs. Lions: Win (2-1)
Honestly, looking at Hard Knocks this year, I want to wish Dan Campbell’s Lions success in 2022. They have a wonderful team in that building, not to mention a fan base hungry for quality football. That said, Jared Goff is not coming to Minneapolis to defeat the Vikings. Ed Donatell’s defence will surprise him.
Saints (London) Week 4: Win (3-1)
The Vikings never lost in London! This game will be harder than the 2013 games against the mediocre Steelers and the 0-16 Browns in 2017, but I think the series will grow to three. Losing Sean Payton could hurt the Saints this year, and Jameis Winston can usually count on a turnover or two. The Vikings won a close game across the pond. Week 5 vs. Bears: Win (4-1)
However, I think they will be in the bottom five. Akiem Hicks and Khalil Mack can’t hurt you anymore, Vikings fans. Despite some jet lag earlier in the week, Minnesota won in a great way after another big day for Justin Jefferson.
Dolphins Week 6: Loss (4-2)
This Dolphin team will be stronger than some think, especially at home. Mike McDaniel provided explosive action on the ground for Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert, while Tua Tagovailoa was good enough to pass the ball to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.
There are also some good plays in defence including Xavien Howard and Jaelan Phillips. The Vikings had a hard time on Dalvin Cook’s return to South Florida.
Week 7 Bye
Week 8 vs Cardinals: Lost (4-3)
I know a home loss in bye week will be a disappointing result. If you remember, it happened last year against the Cooper Rush-led Cowboys. I think it’s going to be close, but the Cardinals will bring DeAndre Hopkins back from his suspension at this point.
Even at the age of 30, he would be a problem for the Viking’s corners. Kyler Murray and his teammates will score along the way and the Cardinals’ defence will be enough to help them win a thriller.
Commander Week 9: Win (5-3)
Commanders from Taylor Heinicke to Carson Wentz are eligible for promotion to the quarterback, but… not many. Wentz is still the league’s worst starter. Washington is gifted defensively, but the Vikings shouldn’t have much trouble winning this game along the way.
Bills Week 10: Loss (5-4)
With all due respect to the Lambeau Field trip in week 17, the toughest game of the season for the Vikings. The Bills seem to be the number one choice for everyone to win the Super Bowl this year, and for good reason.
They have quarterbacks, coaches, weapons and defence (and now Von Miller). If the Vikings can’t play alongside rookie Josh Allen in 2018, what will they do against superstar/alien Josh Allen in 2022? Stefon Diggs’ team defeated Harrison Phillips’s team in the Battle of the Revenge Game.
Week 11 vs. Cowboys: Win (6-4)
The Vikings have lost two home games in a row to the Cowboys: Cooper Rush and Andy Dalton in the QB. The last time they really encountered Dak Prescott, the victory. It doesn’t mean much because the Vikings have a whole new coaching staff, but it’s fun.
After losing three out of four games under the circumstances, Minnesota recovered after home wins over Anthony Barr and Dallas. The Cowboys have a lot of talent, but if Mike McCarthy weren’t their head coach, they’d be an even more worrisome opponent.
Week 12 vs Patriots: Loss (6-5)
O’Connell just wants to beat his former head coach, but Belichick is one of the greatest coaches of all time for a reason. A late touchdown pass from Mac Jones helped New England win a low-scoring game that made a bad holiday for Vikings fans.
I think the Vikings are slightly better than the Patriots. I also couldn’t compete with Bill Belichick looking for a way to slow down O’Connell’s attack in just a week (it’s a Thanksgiving night game).
Week 13 vs. Jets: Win (7-5)
Remember when I said I didn’t think the Bears would be the worst team in the league? That’s because the Falcons, Texans and Jets exist. The Jets have some interesting young players, but unless Zach Wilson takes a big step forward in Year 2, it’s going to be another long season for them. It felt like a double victory for the Vikings. Week 14 Lions: Win (8-5)
After alternating between wins and losses in the first six games after the bye, the Vikings finally won twice in a row for the first time since their three-game winning streak early in the season. Last year’s loss to the then scoreless Lions ended Mike Zimmer’s eight-game winning streak against Detroit. Never fear: O’Connell goes 2-0 against the Lions in his first season.
Week 15 vs. Colts: Win (9-5)
The Colts should be the best team in the AFC South this year, although that’s not saying much since Tennessee got worse and the other two teams are the Texans and Jaguars. Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman Jr. are interesting and the defence looks solid, but I have questions about whether 37-year-old Matt Ryan, offensive tackle and Stephon Gilmore are staying healthy. I think the Vikings held the heat with an impressive win over Indy.
Week 16 vs. Giants: Win (10-5)
Even if you think of the Vikings as a bubble team for the playoffs, this year’s schedule is pretty much the same talent-wise. On the one hand, they have nine home games, seven away games and one neutral game.
Perhaps more importantly, the QB scheme they oppose isn’t that hard. Daniel Jones is at the bottom of the list along with Wilson, Goff and Wentz. I like Brian Daboll whom the Giants hired, but his first year probably won’t be as competitive as O’Connell because every coach inherits something. Make it a winning streak of four matches.
Packers Week 17: Loss (10-6)
The Vikings again head to Green Bay to ring in the New Year, this time on the first day of January. Hopefully, Cousins can play this time. Even if he did, I wouldn’t pick the Vikings to defeat the Packers. Rodgers and their defence are too good. This can be a closed-sector game.
Bears Week 18: Win (11-6)
We’ve seen a lot of pointless end-of-season Vikings games over the years, but I assume Minnesota will be fighting for something in this game – be it a playoff spot or a better seed. While Soldier Fields is usually a scary place for the Vikings, these Bears’ performance should be good enough to top that.
Final record: 11-6
The Vikings finished one game behind the Packers in the NFC North to get the No. 5 or No. 6 seed and open the playoffs on the road.
I didn’t really feel good predicting 11 wins with Cousins quarterback and the first time the head coach called the shots, but that’s how it was when I went through the scheduled game by game. I’ll say this: I believe in O’Connell, Donatell and the talent of the Vikings on both sides of the floor. If they stay reasonably healthy, they should make it to the playoffs this year.
