Top takeaways from India T20 World Cup 2022 squad

Much has changed in India, including the leadership, since the last ICC Men’s T20 World Cup last year in Oman and the UAE. Captain Rohit Sharma and Coach Rahul Dravid will both lead India in their first ICC event when they travel to Australia for the big event in October.

India is buoyed by the return of two-star walkers, but they will miss the services of their all-around ace. In this article, we take a look at five key points from their team announcement.

Don’t press the panic button after India exits the Asia Cup

Despite a setback in the Asia Cup and failing to reach the final after two consecutive defeats in the Super Four. India did not press the panic button and decided to stick with most of the players heading to the UAE. They made just three changes to the Asia Cup roster, all of which were forced.

India has stretched the long ropes to Arshdeep Singh, who had a nightmare against Pakistan in the first Super Four. The 23-year-old uses his left arm to add a missing dimension to the speeding and has the ability to pin the Yorkers to death.

Deepak Hooda and Dinesh Karthik also found a place on the flight to Australia. Despite the Asia Cup changes and changes, these two players could be the main finishers in next month’s big tournament.

India boosted by huge returns

Two of the three changes to the Asia Cup squad are the returning duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, two keys to the shortest speed attack. With their return, the speed attack will be back in full force ahead of the T20 World Cup. T20 World Cup 2022 fans can buy ICC T20 World Cup Tickets from our website.

Bumrah is out of the Asia Cup in the UAE due to a back injury. While Harshal is out with a side injury. Both players have undergone rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and have made a full recovery.

With Bumrah, Harshal, Arshdeep, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma will have a full-speed attack during the World Cup.

Shami demoted to standby

Mohammad Shami and Deepak Chahar are only on the list to mention due to the limited positions available in the speed attack.

After a great performance in the IPL, Shami was supported by several former players, including Ashish Nehra on the ICC Review show, in the World Cup squad.

Nehra saw Shami up close as Gujarat Titans coach at this year’s IPL where he has completed 20 wickets in 16 matches with an economy of eight.

Shami, who was part of the World Cup squad last year, has six wickets with an economy of 8.84 in five matches. However, India opted for new options at Harshal and Arshdeep this year.

Jadeja missed

The third – and forced – substitution in the Asia Cup roster was for Ravindra Jadeja, who is reportedly sidelined with a knee injury. He was part of India’s two group stage wins but missed the Super Four stage where the team collapsed.

Axar Patel has been named as a substitute for the Asia Cup and also has a place on the T20 World Cup roster. Axar proved himself with bat and ball in limited chances. He made an unforgettable journey to the West Indies where he led India to victory after defeat, reaching the number 7 for a whopping 64 over 35 balls.

India could choose to place him directly in the XI. But could also choose to make Deepak Hooda their sixth bowling option.

India prefers experience over youth

Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel earn their place in India’s World Cup spin attack. Between Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi, India chose experience over youth, with the latter on the waiting list.

The decision to pick Ashwin based on the fact that he is the only finger spinner on the front line may not be that easy. Bishnoi, as he has shown in the IPL and in his short international career, relies heavily on googly and is able to use his angles to take the ball away from left-handers.

Ashwin could also offer some help with the bat in hand. Which could work to his advantage during the team selection process.
