USMNT's FIFA World Cup hopes to play across the Atlantic
With the FIFA World Cup approaching in November, the start of the European club season has never been more important for players of the USA men’s national team. Those eager for the Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 will have to leave for the 2022-23 season to confirm their place on the plane. Qatar Football World Cup fans to buy Iran Vs USA Tickets from our website.
With leagues all over the Old World on the move, American coach Gregg Berhalter will be staring at more screens than he can count, keeping tabs on his players’ performance in domestic leagues across the continent.
ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle, Dan Hajducky, Caitlin Murray, Kyle Bonagura, Bill Connelly, Danny Guerra and Austin Lindberg identified each of the 2022-23 World Cup hopefuls and their place with their respective clubs. While the transfer window remains open for the rest of the month, they’ll be updating this story with the latest updates on who’s moving where.
Brendon Aronson | Leeds United | Premier League
Age: 21
Position: Attacking midfielder
Club minutes played in 2021-22: 3,089 minutes (FC Salzburg)
Minutes for the country in 2021-22: 842
Have any of the US players seen their stock rise as fast as Aronson over the past two seasons?
After two solid MLS seasons in the Philadelphia Union, the 21-year-old New Jersey native moved to FC Salzburg in January 2021 and was immediately impressed.
In one and a half seasons in the Austrian Bundesliga, he scored 8 goals and 9 assists. Last year he scored 2 goals in the Champions League qualifiers and also provided 2 assists in the group stage. He also proved his relentless work on ball pressure.
All this time he is almost irreplaceable in the national team. With other key forwards battling injuries, he was one of the USA's most consistent players in FIFA World Cup qualifiers, combining two goals with an assist and a steady stream of energy. He was brought to Leeds United this summer by former Salzburg manager Jesse Marsch, where he played a key role against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton in 174 of 180 minutes.
Taylor Adams | Premier League | Leeds United
Age: 23
Position: Midfield
2021-22 club minutes: 2,057 minutes (RB Leipzig)
Country minutes 2021-22: 1,219
American boxing bag Marsch, the Leeds manager and the British pundit’s favourite, is under fire for the Peacocks, who barely stayed in England’s top flight last season. How did he strengthen the team? This made 23-year-old Adams the fourth most expensive American in football history at the time.
Marsch may not be the pond’s favourite, but Adams is. His debut in Leeds was widely acclaimed: he was one of 12 midfielders to play 90 minutes in the Premier League with over 50 touches and 25 passes, shots and chances in the Premier League. After Leeds were relegated in 2003-04, the Premier League didn’t smoke for 17 years, but with Adams solid, they seemed more than afloat.
Best? Before the World Cup, Adams was a mainstay in the most competitive league in global football.
George Bello | 2. Bundesliga | Arminia Bielefeld
Age: 20
Position: Left Back
Club minutes in 2021-22: 427
Country minutes 2021-22: 249
The 20-year-old left-back, who was taken over from Atlanta United in January, failed to stop Arminia Bielefeld from relegation last season. Both he and his club have started the season very slowly defensively. The move to Germany has not helped Bello’s development so far. Gianluca Busio | Venezia | Serie B
Age: 20
Position: Midfield
2021-22 club minutes played: 1,956
National procedure 2021-22: 121
Busio looked fantastic in his first season in Europe, playing an hour or more in 14 of his first 18 appearances for Venezia, before hitting a calendar that slammed right into the end-of-year fatigue. He has performed so well in Serie A that the Venetian club has been relegated to Serie B, sparking speculation that just 12 months after his arrival, he will leave in search of a chance in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
However, he signed a new two-year deal with the Italian club, saying he plans to bring the team back to the Italian Serie A, and started and played 69 minutes in Venezia’s first-round loss to Genoa of the season.
John Brooks | Not connected
Age: 29
Position: Center-back
2021-22 club minutes played: 3,037 minutes (VfL Wolfsburg)
Country minutes 2021-22: 135
Brooks made just two appearances last season. Both of which took place nearly a year ago, at the International Showcase last September. Berhalter told the German-born and raised central defender that his physique did not match the high line of defence required by the manager’s tactical set-up and that Brooks’ progress in the second half of the season at Wolfsburg failed to convince Berhalter.
Still, without a club, graduate Hertha Berlin left the Volkswagen Arena as a free agent in the summer. Which will not bode well for his chances of a second World Cup.
Reggie Cannon | Primeira Liga Portuguese | Boavista
Age: 24
Position: Right Back
2021-22 club minutes played: 1,873
Country minutes 2021-22: 374
As the 2022 FIFA World Cup team grows to 26, Cannon could eventually become one of the beneficiaries of the three extra seats – an unlikely starter but could add valuable depth. He has played every minute for Portuguese top club Boavista this season. As he appears to be recovering from a three-month injury-hit 2021-22 campaign. While primarily a right-back, Cannon is able to play as a centre-back, having played as a back-five for Boavista last season. This versatility could be helpful, especially if Berhalter wanted to use something similar to the USMNT’s modified 3-2-2-3 form.
Cameron Carter-Vickers | Celtic | Scottish Premiership
Age: 24
Position: Center-back
2021-22 club minutes played: 4,064
2021-22 Country Minutes: 216
The Celtic signed Carter-Vickers permanently this summer after a pleasant loan spell in 2021-22. That means the 24-year-old – a strong passer and air force – will play for the same club for the first time in his club career for the first time in two consecutive seasons. This is certainly not bad for his overall development.
Konrad de la Fuente | Greek Super League | Olympiakos
Age: 21
Position: Attacking midfielder
2021-22 club minutes played: 1,077 minutes (Marseille)
Country minutes 2021-22: 72
The former Barcelona academy graduate moved to Marseille last summer in hopes of more playing time, but injuries have limited his impact. Now on loan to Olympiakos after initial reports of a La Liga return. Konrad’s chances of making the World Cup roster seem slim. With the move to the Greek club, he only needs consistent playing time to stay in the USA combination after Qatar FIFA World Cup.
Luca de la Torre | La Liga | Celta Vigo
Age: 24
Position: Midfield
2021-22 club minutes: 3,043 (Heracles Almelo)
Country minutes 2021-22: 347
From 2013 to 2020, de la Torre played between Fulham’s youth and senior teams for nearly a decade, mostly anonymously.
After that, he also played well in the Eredivisie from 2020 to 2022; of the players with 5,000 minutes played, de la Torre, ranked first in strike rate in offensive third (86.1%) and overall passing second in percentage (87.3%) and 16th in chances creation (55).
He will be contributing under the brightest lights yet, with a move to La Liga side Celta Vigo this summer. Although he failed to come off the bench in the season opener. If he can get into the rhythm and build momentum in Spain, he can turn heads in Qatar.
