After selecting just three predictions in the 2021 National Football League (NFL) draft, the Seattle Seahawks increased them in the most recent draft. Not all nine selected rookies will have much on the floor, and not all of them are even locked into the team’s final 53-man regular-season roster.

However, some first-year players will be starters and key contributors to the Seahawks, with many new faces in key positions.

Let’s take a look at how each of these nine rookies will affect the Seahawks’ plans this season, with the team’s first game on Saturday, August 13.

Charles Cross, OT

In the Seahawks’ first round in 2022, Cross was a first-team left-tackle representative in the early stages of training camp.

Cross who comes from Mike Leach’s pass-intensive program as former Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach, will eventually take on more blocking duties in the Seahawks’ offence. But he’s still trying to figure out where the quarterback is.

As one of the nation’s top college running backs in 2021, Walker entered Seattle with plenty of opportunities. Chris Carson’s injury retirement opens the door for the top of the depth chart to begin training camp. Walker will play alongside Rashaad Penny to take the starting spot.

Showing his mettle in the catch game, Walker hit two red zone touchdowns on Day 4 of training camp. One each for quarterbacks Drew Lock and Geno Smith.

Boye Mafe, LB

Mafe fills another big need for the Seahawks heading into 2022. As the team’s defence needs a hungry young player who can overtake the opposing quarterbacks and wreak havoc in the backcourt.

One of the most athletic potential players in the 2022 draft, Mafe was a high school high jumper and ran an impressive 4.57 40-yard dash in the NFL Boye Scouts Union that left Indianapolis Sri Lanka’s talent judges stunned.

He has already been compared to former Seahawks star passer Cliff Avril. Mafe’s elite athleticism will be key to slowing down divisional opponents, who have fast quarterbacks like Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals and Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers.

Expect Mafe to hit the field a lot this season and at least one or two big rookies to make up the difference.

Coby Bryant, CB

Bryant snapped photos with the second team during training camp but was impressive early on. So far, the Cincinnati product seems to be getting its hands on the ball every day in training camp and has been especially stingy with deep balls.

One of his best highlights came on Day 4 when he jumped in the paint to hit the ball from 6-foot-7 tight end Colby Parkinson, sparking enthusiasm among his defensive teammates.

Bryant still follows Sidney Jones on the depth chart. But the rookie could make a second major contribution to the Seahawks. If his great field performances carry over into the preseason and regular season.

Abraham Lucas, OT

A local product of Washington State and Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett. Lucas was the second offensive tackle selected by the Seahawks in the draft.

Lucas is a little-known talent who has had limited first-team representation in training camps. So far and will likely be a reserve tacker at the start of the regular season. Like Cross, Lucas took part in a transient intensive college program and had to adapt to a more general hasty offence.

Stone Forsythe and Jake Curham have more experience than Lucas. But the rookie has the potential to get the right tackle after training camp. The most likely scenario is that Lucas will make sporadic minutes and the Seahawks will move players into appropriate tackle positions throughout the season. Tariq Woolen, CB

Woolen has earned the nickname “Avatar” for his new teammates due to his athleticism and size in the corner-back position. The 6-foot-4 Woolen ran 4.26 meters for 40 yards in the Boye Scouts Union. The second fastest time of all players at the event.

The product of UT San Antonio should be given every chance to prove that he is able to match his physical attributes. Woolen is another player who can make a big impact later in the season when the injury hits the secondary.

Woolen may not see much action in the beginning. But he seems like a sleepy candidate who could play some great games for the Seahawks this season.

Tyreke Smith, DE

The Ohio State product began training on a physically unfit squad due to hip problems but returned to action on August 1.

Smith saw a lot of action against NFL talent during his time with the Buckeyes. But it may take time to adjust to the outer linebacker role on the Seahawks’ new 3-4 program under defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt.

He’s still a rookie to prove himself in the preseason. So Smith could be a player going back and forth between a training class and the active roster to start the season.

Bo Melton, WR

The Seahawks used their last two draft picks at wide receiver, and neither will crack the 53-man roster in Week 1.

Melton, who was limited by a hamstring problem during off-season practice activities, will have to play on special teams at some point this season to make his way into the roster for the Seahawks.

Melton, a two-time college captain, has leadership skills that should serve him. As he battles a crowded field of wide receivers for a spot on the list. It’s hard to imagine, though, that Melton would have any influence early on in his first NFL season.

Dareke Young, WR

Young has so far impressed in training camp more than Melton. Even comparing Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll to Ricardo Lockette. Who has been a superstar for the past decade? Special team shiners and reserve wide receivers for bowling teams.

Rock praised Young’s understanding of tactics and sense of the game in the second team’s attack.

Young, who missed the offseason this season with a hamstring problem, has to prove himself in three preseason games with the Seahawks. That said, given the praise from Carroll and Lock, don’t be surprised. If Young makes the roster early in the season and makes an impact.
