San Francisco only went 2-4 in the NFC West last season, a record that could easily be broken this year. After the Russell Wilson trade, the Seahawks made this off-season even worse. Despite all their headlines, the Cardinals have remained largely unchanged, even though they will have to miss DeAndre Hopkins for the first six games of the season. Then came the Rams, who reloaded for another game.

The 49ers preferred more than just a touchdown at home to Seattle in Week 2, which should have been an easy win. A trip to Lumen Field in mid-December will be more challenging, but I’m confident I can call it a win.
San Francisco will host Monday Night Football in Week 4, a rematch of last season’s NFC championship game. Los Angeles is a favourite away from home and will be a favourite again at home when the team plays again in four weeks. That said, the 49ers faced the Rams in their last six games of the regular season, even though Los Angeles held the best record in the playoffs. Let’s call it a split.
It’s a 3-1 start with two games to go against the Cardinals. San Francisco is favoured on both fronts: Week 11 takes place in a neutral location in Mexico and Week 18 in the Gulf. That setup benefits the 49ers, who don’t have to travel to Arizona for a year after being defeated by Kliff Kingsbury’s team.
However, the Cardinals have done well against San Francisco in recent years, so let’s break that record too to improve that record to a 4-2 record against the NFC West.

The rest of the NFC timeline is mixed. It started with a road trip to Chicago in Week 1, followed by consecutive trips to the Panthers and Falcons in Weeks 5 and 6. The other three NFC opponents presented greater challenges, even though they were all at home. New Orleans visited in late November and the pirates two weeks later. The conference schedule ends with a week 16 match with Commander.
San Francisco has won five of its six games against NFC opponents — and Tampa Bay’s game is finicky. To be fair, it’s a 5-1 game (lost to Tampa Bay), although the 49ers could also lose to the Saints. That brings them to a 9-3 record.
All that’s left now are five matches against the AFC – all against hopeful playoffs. In Week 3 Sunday Night Football, the 49ers are underdogs on the road against the Broncos, the Chiefs are the favourites on the road in Week 7, and the Raiders are in Las Vegas in Week 17. A small advantage. A week 10 game with the Chargers is another option.
Raiders and Charger
Even when you consider how difficult this time has been, the 49ers have not been swept across the entire AFC West. One, maybe two wins against the Raiders and Chargers would make sense.
Coupled with a visit from the Dolphins, another expected win. San Francisco sits comfortably in the North with 9.5 wins for the second straight season.
An 11-6/12-5 finish could even challenge the Rams for the division’s best record and one of the better NFC finishes. But for our purposes, it puts the 49ers comfortably past their expected profit total. Which explains the huge odds on that side.
Giving some breathing room for an unexpected loss (or two) gave me more confidence in this option. San Francisco is well positioned to beat some of the stronger teams on the schedule.
