A year ago, the 49ers added linebacker Alfredo Gutierrez as part of the NFL’s international players’ channel program. Giving them an extra practice lineup if he didn’t make the 53-man roster. He can stay another year.
DL Alex Barrett
The 49ers seem to love reserve defender Alex Barrett, who made an impact on a very poor defence in 2020.
CB Dontae Johnson
It’s hard to predict what will happen to veteran cornerback Dontae Johnson, who will miss several weeks with a rib injury against Green Bay. The Niners could put him on the injured list, or they could delegate him to a cheaper training class.

Undrafted rookie linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball had a 57-yard interception against the Packers. This certainly boosted his roster reserves, but won’t help him progress beyond Pro Football Focus marking the NFL’s first linebacker to enter 2022.
Still, McCrary-Ball’s reporting skills and versatility make him stand out among the freshman linebackers vying for a spot in the training class.
CB Tariq Castro Fields
The 49ers traded second-team cornerback Ambry Thomas for Tariq Castro-Fields in the sixth round late in training camp, a development. While the former Penn State cornerback didn’t play much against the Packers. He certainly deserves attention for a Johnson-like role in years to come.
CB Ka’Dar Hollman
Yes, three cornerbacks in the training class, but that makes sense.
With veteran corners Charvarius Ward, Emmanuel Moseley and Jason Verrett all dealing with injuries early in the preseason. It would be wise to put in some extra body to avoid losing.
That would point to a quick corner, Ka’Dar Hollman, who was stuck in some capacity. After Friday’s up-and-down preseason performance against his former team, the Packers.
S Tayler Hawkins
In training camp, Tyler Hawkins, who was off track, radiated some hope, but he still looked too raw and unmatched in his game.
