Shaun Edwards discloses he wanted to join the England team after the 2015 Rugby World Cup

Shaun Edwards has exposed that he wants to join England's coaching staff following England's defeat in the 2015 Rugby World Cup pool stage. Edwards, arguably the world's top-rated defensive coach who has worked wonders in Wales with Warren Gatland, now plays a key role in France's turnaround. The former rugby union player is, of course, English, although, despite his widespread profile, he has never played for an England side.

Speaking to BT Sport, Edwards exposed that he would have liked to go to England after a dismal 2015 Home World Cup because of their talent.

"When they didn't make it to the final stage in 2015, after being knocked out of the World Cup, I definitely wanted to go there," said Edwards.

"I've looked at all the Saracens players and I have absolutely no doubt that they will win some Six Nations titles over the next four years.

"Which isn't surprising to me because they have some good players, Eddie Jones came on and played well and won the first two games.

"They have a lot of players who are clearly struggling after the World Cup and there is nothing that some people are a little upset about.

"They have done that, English guys, those are the kind of players you want to prove to yourself. The Saracens have won some trophies too."

The offer was made in 2006.

The English RFU never made an offer for Edwards after the 2015 World Cup, so the Wigans stayed in Wales for another four years.

However, Edwards did reveal that former England manager Andy Robinson offered him a job in 2006, although he ultimately decided to stay on as the Wasps manager.

While Edwards will remain in France until the end of the Rugby World Cup 2023 in France, it is likely that the British RFU will try to lure him home after the game, as long as the Les Bleus defense remains as solid as it is now.
