Carter was the main player of the All Blacks who underwent their worst performance in World Cup history when they were knocked out by France in the quarter-finals of the 2007 World Championship, one of the largest setbacks at the World Cup.

In the years since that setback, the All Blacks have looked to themselves to identify and address their inadequacies at that World Cup to prevent such a tragedy from repeating itself in future competitions.

Unable to handle the pressure as permanent World Cup favourites, they succumbed to the weight of expectations when they suffered adversity from Les Bleus in Cardiff 15 years ago.

As a result, Carter and his All Blacks colleagues spent a lot of time working with spiritual skills experts to increase themselves ahead of the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand.

The result was a first World Cup win in 24 years, with the All Blacks winning the Webb Ellis Cup at home against France and a historic second consecutive title with England four years later.

Talking at the Aotearoa Rugby Pod, Carter said the knowledge he and his All Blacks colleagues knowledgeable about coping with pressure and hardship was crucial to their performance at the 2011 and 2015 World Cups.

“A lot of the work and triumph we've had in 2011 and 2015 is based on the lessons of 2007,” Carter said Aotearoa Rugby Pod.

"The spirit of the game because we can't grip the pressure we've known that we need to devote more time to our mental assets. There's been a lot of talk about the All Blacks as a sticking point during the World Cup.

“Once we were stressed, we weren't performing, so we spent a lot of time working with [mental ability coaches] Ceri Evans, Gilbert Enoka, and really working on our mental asset and getting really stressed.

"We achieved to turn things around in 2010 and 2011 when the Springboks completely conquered us in three Tests games, actually helped us and although we had a slump in 2009."

After being discharged from international rugby after the 2015 World Cup, Carter has preserved a keen interest in the All Blacks as a viewer from nearby.

Like most Kiwis, the 112-Test top five retired from all rugby early last year as they watched the All Blacks sink into the 2019 World Cup in Japan, beating England 19-7 in the semi-final.

Disparate most Kiwis, however, Carter sees the defeat as a boon to New Zealand's opportunities ahead of next year's Rugby World Cup in France.

Carter told Aotearoa Rugby Pod that he understands comparisons between the current All Blacks and the team that has established after the 2007 World Cup, as Ian Foster's squad has a number of members who have now failed at rugby's top level.
