Ryder Cup star Shane Lowry request to equal PGA Tour record at Houston Open
Shane Lowry is one of four Ryder Cup players hoping to match the PGA Tour record at this week's Houston Open. Players from outside the United States won the final five games of the tournament, one less than the 2004 record and the same number as in 2008. Lowry, Tyrrell Hatton, Lee
Westwood, and Ian Poulter tee off at Memorial Park and aim to become a team
made up of Irish Seamus Power and 2016 Masters Champion Danny Willett. The
international team, including the special, won six consecutive victories.
Defending champion Carlos
Ortiz has been ruled out and the 49th player in the world withdrew due to a shoulder
injury.
Ortiz became the first
Mexican to win the PGA Tour in 42 years, Ryder
Cup, thanks to 65 last year, putting him two shots ahead of Matsuyama and
Dustin Johnson.
Ortiz said in a statement:
"Unfortunately, I have been struggling with a left shoulder injury since
Japan (the ZOZO Championship in October). After meeting my doctor this morning,
he advised me to rest for the rest of the season to recover."
World No. 12 Tony Finau is
the number one player in the field, and former number one and four-time major
champion Brooks Koepka is hoping to find form after missing out on promotion in
Mayakoba last week.
Not in the top ten since the
Open in July, Koepka is the players' advisor for the Memorial Park which was
redesigned by architect Tom Doak before hosting the tournament in 2020.
