Ellis Jenkins aims for Rugby World Cup 2023 after test return
Ellis Jenkins, a talented Welsh backline, admitted that after his outstanding performance in international competitions, taking part in the Rugby World Cup in France is his long-term goal. The flanker was sidelined for 26 months after a serious knee injury, but Jenkins performed very well when he entered the test for the first time in three years. Though losing to World Springboks 23-18, the 28-year-old was impressive, finishing his comeback as the Wales captain after Jonathan Davis left the field.
Jenkins admitted there are
more short-term goals to be achieved before he really thinks about the 2023 Rugby World Cup, but the back row
insists the game is his ultimate goal.
“The World Cup will
certainly be there, you always try to set short-term and long-term goals for
yourself,” he said.
"For over two years,
returning to the stadium has been my sole focus.
"Since it's been trying
to get back to where I was, I came back. It's great to come back and play, but
I want to get back to the level I think I can play.
"I may not be there
yet, this is what I want to realize, but I'm willing to work hard to get there.
"Which takes a lot of
work, I am now or do my best, I'm trying to physically get back to where. But
I'm trying to get on the right track to reach my goal."
The Springboks captain, Siya
Kolisi, is a great admirer and he spoke enthusiastically about his opponent's
number after a fierce test match.
"He's obviously a good
guy, isn't he, Siya? He just said, 'It's nice to see you again,'" Jenkins
added.
"When I was injured, he
gave me a jersey for our 2018 game. A few weeks later, Siya was at the
Barbarian and sent me his jersey." Rugby Fans

At the same time, after Wales pushed South Africa to its limits, Jenkins easily placed team disappointment above personal achievement.
"Especially the way you
lose, your competitor, you are disappointed in losing," he said.
“You can see what this means
to all of them, my best friend are all here, my family, and my girlfriend. This
is a part that people can't see.
“It's great to have everyone
present. It should have been great to end with a win.
"A lot of people are
used to rugby without an audience, this is actually not approximately, I'm used
to and I strength only play three or four games without throngs.
“I always say that except
for rugby, it runs along West Gate Street (to the stadium), when people ask
what it's like to play at the Principality Stadium.
“This really prepares you for
the race, everyone is screaming, you get out of the car.
"Any chance to play for
Wales is a great honor. We are lucky enough to be able to do what we do and it
will never be forgotten."
