FIFA World Cup 2022 -What must happen for England and Wales to advance to the Football World Cup round of 16?
Wales will have a tough time making it to the round of 16, but England is close to moving on to the World Cup's knockout round. As the group stage draws to a close, we examine how it is holding up. Football World Cup fans can England Vs Wales Tickets from our website.
Wales' first World Cup appearance since 1958 now depends on them
beating England on Tuesday and hoping other results go their way after their
2-0 loss to Iran. England's dull 0-0 draw with the US cost them the chance to
secure qualification, but Gareth Southgate's team will still advance if they
avoid losing against Wales by four goals.
France were the first team to secure their spot in the round of
16 with a 2-1 victory over Denmark. After two consecutive losses, hosts Qatar
and Canada have already gone eliminated.
Group A
On
Friday, Qatar experienced heartbreak as the hosts were the first team to be
eliminated from the competition. After falling to Senegal 3-1, Qatar was
eliminated early after the Netherlands and Ecuador drew 1-1. It is the earliest
a World Cup host nation has ever been eliminated.
The
top three teams are separated by just a point going into Tuesday's final Group
A games thanks to the draw between the Netherlands and Ecuador. The Netherlands
and Ecuador, both three-time champions, are aware that a draw against Qatar and
Senegal, respectively, will advance them to the round of 16.
Group B
England was held to a scoreless draw by the United States,
missing the opportunity to secure a last-16 position with one game remaining.
Going into the final group games, all four teams will still be in with a chance
of moving on to the next round.
With four points from two games, England is in the strongest
position to advance if Southgate's team can avoid losing to Wales by four goals
on Tuesday. However, if Iran defeats the United States or the Americans win by
at least four goals, England can still finish first without winning and take
top honours.
If
Wales is not defeated by four or more goals and Iran and the USA tie, England
will also take first place. Wales lost to Iran on Friday, but they still have a
shot at the round of 16. Wales must defeat England and hope for a tie between
the United States and Iran in order to advance.
Wales must defeat England by four goals to progress
if the match between the USA and Iran does not result in a tie. Iran will
advance with a draw while the United States must win, and Wales must defeat
England for England to advance. Football World Cup fans can FIFA World
Cup Tickets from our website.
Group C
Poland and Argentina are in first and second place in the group
after defeating Saudi Arabia and Mexico, respectively, by scores of 2-0, on
Saturday. However, since those two will face off in the group-decider on
Wednesday, there is a good likelihood that either Lionel Messi or Robert
Lewandowski will be eliminated.
Argentina will advance if they win, while Poland will advance if
the match ends in a tie. If both games are drawn, both teams advance. If Saudi
Arabia defeats Mexico, they will unexpectedly advance to the knockout stages.
Mexico must defeat Saudi Arabia if it hopes to advance. If both
they and Poland triumph, they would be eliminated. In the event that the other
game had a different outcome, the Mexicans would likely need to prevail by a
slim margin.
France defeated Denmark 2-1 thanks to two goals from Kylian
Mbappe, securing their spot in the round of 16. A draw against Tunisia in their
final qualification match on Wednesday will also guarantee first place.
Any of the other three teams could qualify along with Les Bleus.
Australia will advance if they defeat Denmark, while Tunisia may
overtake France and take second place with a draw. To have any hope of moving
on, Denmark must win. If Tunisia and Denmark both win, the team that advances
will be determined by goal differential or one of the other factors listed
below.
All four teams in Group E still have a chance to advance as
Germany rallied from a goal down to tie Spain 1-1 on Sunday. On Thursday at
19:00 GMT, Japan plays Spain and Costa Rica plays Germany in the final two
games in this section.
As long as the other
match also results in a draw or a Germany victory, Spain will win the group
with a win or a draw. If Spain lost, Japan would take first place in the group
and the Spanish may still be sent home. In order for that to occur, either Luis
Enrique’s team would need to lose or Costa Rica to defeat Germany, or Germany
would need to win and improve upon their current goal difference of eight
behind that of Spain.
Japan will
also finish in the top two if both matches end in a draw.
If Costa Rica defeats Germany and Spain draws with Japan, they
will win the group and advance. Only if Spain defeats Japan would a draw for
Costa Rica be sufficient to advance. Germany is last, but if they win and Japan
loses, they will advance as runners-up. Germany may need to win by two goals if
Japan draws because they presently have a lower goal differential than Japan.
Group F
On Sunday, Canada scored
their first-ever World Cup goal, but the celebration was short-lived as Croatia
responded by scoring four goals to knock Canada out of contention for the round
of 16.
Croatia is now in first
place in Group F on goal differential and will automatically qualify if they
avoid losing to Belgium. If they achieve the same outcome as Morocco and keep
their better goal difference, they will also clinch first place.
If Morocco defeats
Canada in their last group match and/or draws, they will advance. If Belgium
defeats Croatia, they will advance. Only if Morocco loses against Canada will a
draw be sufficient, with goal differential determining which teams advance.
The final games are
played at 19:00 GMT on Thursday 1 December.
