425/1

Prediction

Tunisia offers Australia a real chance on three points, but winning over France or Denmark will be a tough task. A draw in their opening game against the recent lack of cohesion in France could knock the Socceroos out of Group D, but it would come as a surprise. FIFA World Cup 2022 fans can buy Australia Football World Cup Tickets from our website.

Australia’s FIFA World Cup team leads the way in collective support for workers, LGBT rights

Australia’s national men’s soccer team, the Socceroos, have just become the first FIFA World Cup team to speak up collectively on human rights issues in Qatar.

In a powerful video released on October 27, 16 current and former Australian players. Supported by the wider player community, expressed their solidarity with migrant workers and LGBT people. Making clear that “dignity, trust, universal values such as respect and courage should define football values.”

The players correctly assess the situation in Qatar, where important reforms have been implemented but need to be better implemented. In addition, they acknowledge that the decision to host the World Cup in Qatar has caused avoidable pain and damage to “numerous migrant workers” who are not covered by the recent reforms.

FIFA has not asked Qatar to make commitments on labour rights for millions of migrant workers. FIFA knew Qatar had to build World Cup infrastructure.

“These suffering migrant workers are not just numbers. Like the immigrants who have shaped our country and football, they have the same courage and determination to build better lives,” said union chairman and former Socceroos player Alec Wilkinson.

In the video, Socceroos strongly support effective remedies for disenfranchised migrant workers. The Center for Migrant Workers and the decriminalization of all same-sex relationships.

The Qatari authorities responded to the video, stressing that “no country is perfect” and that “protecting the health, safety, security and dignity of every employee contributing to this World Cup is our top priority”. Fund for employees who are abused because reforms came too late or were poorly implemented.

In May, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and a global coalition of human rights groups, unions and fans launched the #PayUpFIFA campaign, demanding that FIFA provide financial compensation for serious abuses against migrant workers, including death, injury, unpaid wages and excessive wages recruitment costs.

By supporting the call to redress, Socceroos join seven other football associations, as well as sponsors, political leaders and fans.

The unprecedented and daring act of solidarity by current and former Australian footballers has set an important example. FIFA should respond by announcing that it will rectify the abuses it has enabled and benefited from.

In a video message produced by the Professional Footballers of Australia (PFA) released Wednesday. The 16 Socceroos called on the host country to recognize and legalize same-sex marriage and improve the rights of migrant workers.

The PFA also sent an open letter to Qatar expressing the need for reform.

“(We are trying to) anchor reforms in Qatar and build a lasting legacy,” the player said in the video.

“This should include establishing an immigrant resource centre. Providing effective legal remedies for people who have no rights, and legalizing all same-sex relationships.

“These are fundamental rights that should be accorded to all and will ensure Qatar’s continued progress – a legacy that goes well beyond the final whistle of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.”

The Guardian reported last year that in the decade after Qatar’s successful bid to host the 2010 World Cup, 6,500 migrant workers died in the country, most of them in low-paid, dangerous labour, often in extreme heat.

The report – which was “categorically” denied by tournament organizers – did not link all 6,500 deaths to infrastructure projects for the World Cup, nor was it independently verified by CNN.

Qatar has also been the target of criticism of the country’s anti-gay laws.

The 2022 World Cup starts on November 20 and runs until December 18 in the Gulf country. Australia’s first game is against France on November 22.
