Key inquiries ahead of the British Open 2023 and Ryder Cup 2023 and other golf season
Golf had a dramatic year in 2022, and that is probably an understatement. As tussles between the Saudi-backed breakaway series and the PGA Tour and DP World Tour dominated headlines, the debut of LIV Golf sent shockwaves across the sport. Tiger Woods's shocking recovery and
ongoing physical issues reached their height on the fairways at The Open at St.
Andrews in July. Pictures of his sorrowful stroll down the 18th fairway rank
among the year's most iconic pictures.
After Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick, each won their first major tournament of the year at The Masters and the US Open, respectively, Australia's Cameron Smith would go on to win the Claret Jug. He was the third person to do so.
Rory McIlroy's quest for the grand slam |
The women's calendar also saw
first-time major champions, with Ashleigh Buhai of South Africa winning the
British Women's Open on her 221st career LPGA Tour starts before Jennifer Kupcho
won the Chevron Championship for her first LPGA Tour victory.
LIV 2023 will continue to include
several fresh storylines, including those involving Woods' fitness and the
conflicts surrounding the game of golf. The Ryder Cup and Solheim Cups, Rory
McIlroy's quest for the grand slam, and more are all included in CNN's preview
of the next delicious golf season.
Will the fissures in LIV Golf heal?
The fractures brought on by the
development of LIV Golf are not healed any time soon. When The Masters
organisers announced in December that LIV Golf players will be permitted to
compete in the major in April, a group of 9/11 survivors pledged to demonstrate
at the Augusta National venue's "front door."
Less than a month had passed since
Tiger Woods requested that Greg Norman, CEO of LIV Golf, step down. The PGA
Tour allegedly threatened to ban golfers who participated in LIV Golf
tournaments for life in an antitrust action that the LIV series and several of
its players joined in August 2022. In September, the PGA Tour filed a
countersuit.
Among the biggest names to criticise
the new series were Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, with McIlroy accusing it of
"tear apart" men's professional golf.
"I believe there are solutions to
fix it and put it back together. However, with everything else going on at the
moment, I don't see that occurring any time soon, he said CNN in August.
The first men's major of the year will
include a number of LIV players at Augusta in April, and LIV Golf participant
and reigning Open winner Cameron Smith is one of the front-runners to win the
green jacket.

Can McIlroy accomplish his career grand slam
at this point?
For McIlroy, the year 2022 was
bittersweet. The Northern Irishman won three PGA Tour championships while
playing some of the finest golf of his career as he returned to the top spot in
the world rankings for the first time in more than two years.
The 33-year-string old's of top-10 finishes
on the PGA Tour were mirrored at the highest level during the majors, as he
didn't place worse than eighth in any of the four top competitions. However,
McIlroy's impressive consistency was marred by heartbreaking close calls, as
his second-place finish at The Masters was followed by an agonising final-day
loss at The Open.
At St. Andrews, McIlroy and Smith were
tied for the lead going into Sunday, but a series of missed birdie putts and
Smith's strong finish ended McIlroy's chances of ending an eight-year major
drought. Given his current form, many consider the four-time major champion the
favourite to wear the green jacket at Augusta in April 2023.
A victory at The Masters would not
only put an end to McIlroy's search for another major victory, but it would
also allow him to join the elite club of golfers who have completed the career
grand slam. Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan, and Gene
Sarazen are the only athletes to have won all four major championships.
By 2014, just seven years after
turning professional, McIlroy had already put himself one green jacket away
from immortality with victories at the US and British Open Championships as
well as two PGA Championships. British

But despite seven top-10 performances
at Augusta, including a disastrous final-day meltdown in 2011, McIlroy has
unable to translate form into first place. Considering his impressive resume,
his legacy is already well-established, but for McIlroy and golf as a whole,
completing the sixth career grand slam would be a historic day.
How many games does Tiger Woods plan to play?
Woods' return to the game at The
Masters in April, after a 17-month absence, shocked the golfing community. It
was surprising that the 15-time major champion was even competing after
suffering severe leg injuries in a vehicle accident in February 2021.
Tiger Woods is among the only athletes who have won all four major championship |
Even more astonishing was the notion
that Woods, who was clearly having difficulty on the tough Augusta National
course, would nonetheless manage to make the cut. Since then, Woods has been
open about the negative effects of a harsh rehabilitation program.
His playing time has been drastically
reduced, and one of his few appearances in 2022 will be an emotional cameo at
the 150th Open Championship. Woods withdrew from the Hero World Challenge in
December due to foot problems, and later that month, during the seventh edition
of The Match, he once more appeared to be having trouble moving.
The 47-year-appearance old's on
tournament fairways is therefore expected to remain infrequent, although Zach
Johnson hasn't ruled out Woods playing in this year's Ryder Cup 2023. The US
captain spoke earlier this month about Woods' probable participation in the
biennial competition, which will get underway in Italy in September.
"I would only think about
bringing him onto the team... Johnson told the press, "If he was putting
up some statistics and some scores, number one, where he's showing some sign of
being competitive.
Second, that conversation would be
held with him in particular as well as the other members of that team.
If Tiger Woods is somebody I can
trust, it's that he has a lot riding on this squad and winning more
championships.
Will Europe exact retribution on the US at the
Ryder Cup?
The first Ryder Cup to be held in
Italy will be held at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club outside of Rome
in September, and Team Europe will be hoping to cast away demons there. Ryder Cup fans can buy Ryder

At Whistling Straights in 2021, Team
USA handed the Europeans a historically humiliating setback while cruising to a
19-9 triumph in Wisconsin. It was the biggest victory margin in a Ryder Cup
since 1979 when players from continental Europe were allowed to compete on the
team that had previously consisted of Great Britain and Ireland.
The team's anguish was highlighted by
McIlroy's tearful comments after the humiliating loss, in which the Northern
Irishman admitted he "should have done more." Since then, McIlroy has
been stronger and stronger, and his outstanding performance has given the
Europeans hope that they may stop the US from defending their title.
In August, Luke Donald of England was
named Team Europe's new captain in place of the original option, Henrik
Stenson, who had taken part in the LIV Golf series.
Can the US stop a European Solheim Cup triple?
In contrast, the US Team will be
fighting to keep Europe from winning the biennial women's competition three
times in a row in 2023 in Andalucia, Spain.
After consecutive victories in 2015
and 2017, the US lost by a little margin at Gleneagles in Scotland before
losing once more at home at Ohio's Inverness Club in 2021. Catriona Matthew, a
Scotswoman who served as captain of Team Europe, guided Team Europe to both
victories. Suzann Pettersen of Norway assumed the reins for this year.
Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson, and
Jennifer Kupcho are just a few of the talented athletes Stacy Lewis, the US
Team captain, can choose from in 2022.
The US has 10 wins to Europe's 7,
despite recent results favouring their opponents. On September 18, the
competition is scheduled to begin at Finca Cortesin Golf Club.
Will there be a new big winner?
The year 2022 was favourable for large
first-time winners. Five of the nine main winners in both the men's and women's
games were first-time winners.
The three new male champions,
Scheffler, Fitzpatrick, and Smith, were all in their 20s, making them
relatively youthful athletes. Numerous gifted young golfers on the PGA Tour,
none more so than emerging sensation Tom Kim, will be inspired by their
success.
The South Korean's triumph at the
Shriners Children's Open in October, the latest high point in a breakthrough
year that also featured a prominent Presidents Cup role, made him the first
golfer since Tiger Woods to win twice on the PGA Tour before turning 21.
Other competitors include 25-year-old
Viktor Hovland, who finished in the top four at The Open, and Will Zalatoris,
who hopes to break a terrible run of close calls.
Zalatoris, who is only one year older
than his Norwegian colleague Hovland, has suffered cruel ends to several recent
outstanding major performances, coming in second place three times in the last
two years. The American can carry over a fantastic degree of consistency into
2023 after six top-10 finishes in 10 major tournaments.
Ryder Cup 2021 |
Atthaya Thitikul, who is only 19 years
old, is still making waves in the women's game. The Thai prodigy, who only
began her career as a professional in 2020, was named World No. 1 in October 2022
and LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year the following month after two victories in her
debut.
Similarly, Nasa Hataoka of Japan will
now want to add a major victory to her outstanding resume of six LPGA Tour
victories. Hataoka, another young player at the age of 24, has already had a
series of great major performances, placing second at the US Women's Open and
Women's PGA Championship in 2018 and 2021, respectively.
