Qatar
aspires to new heights.
Qatar's best
handball performance occurred eight years ago when they took home the silver
medal from the IHF Men's World Championship on their home court. The Asian team
is still a force to be reckoned with even though they haven't been able to
match that success up to this point.
They
performed well once more, finishing eighth in France in 2017; two years later,
they had to settle for 13th in Germany/Denmark, but in Egypt in 2021, they were
back in the top eight. The Asian team narrowly defeated Argentina (26:25) to advance
to the quarterfinals, but Sweden prevented them from advancing to the
semifinals (23:35).
Qatar has
become more well-known within the last ten years on its continent. Since 2014,
they have triumphed in all five of the Asian Men's Handball Championships, most
recently defeating Bahrain in the final in January 2022. However, the team led
by renowned Spanish coach Valero Rivera was unable to qualify for the Tokyo
Olympics in 2020 after losing to Bahrain in the qualification round.
The team
persevered despite it being a tough pill to swallow in an effort to qualify for
the Paris Olympics 2024.

Since 2013,
Rivera has served as the head coach for Qatar. He has previously declared that
the Olympic Games 2024 will mark his last Olympic cycle. The 59-year-old, former
Spain and Barcelona coach, has played a key role in improving the national
team.
At the same
time, a number of elite players, some of whom are still on the team, were the
only ones who made the advancement possible. Left back Frankis Marzo, a Cuban-born
player currently playing for Al-Kuwait where he amassed 58 goals to become the
team's leading scorer, was especially impressive for Egypt 2021.
Rafael Capote, a left back, and Al Duhail, another player of Cuban descent, both offer some shooting prowess. These two players can still be quite dangerous on offence even though they are already 35 years old, making it challenging for any opponents to contain them.
Qatar, who
has been put in a group with Germany, Serbia, and Algeria, is ready to get past
the first obstacle and move on to the next round because other younger players
have also recently advanced. Additionally, they hope that this is not the final
one.
