Six Nations: England star Ellis Genge appointed to Leicester Tigers captain

England star Ellis Genge replaced Tom young’s as captain of the Leicester Tigers for the 2021-22 season. The 26-year-old made 30 appearances for the Red Roses and joined the Bristol Tigers in 2016 to replace young’s, who has been leading the team since the 2014-15 season. After the transfer, Genge made 89 tries and scored 9 appearances. He also became an important member of Eddie Jones's England team.

The forward appeared in all five games of the 2020 Red Roses Guinness Six Nations, scoring in BT Murrayfield main try against Scotland and also playing every game for England in this year's championship.

Leicester Tigers coach Steve Borthwick said: "His capability to link people is a very influential force for him. He has influenced foreign players, international players, (players) from different backgrounds, old player’s young players.

"He wants to be a rugby player and very seriously wants to be a really influential leader. With this in mind, this is a very positive step."

Genge will be joined by deputy captain Hanro Liebenberg as the Tigers hope to build on the sixth place ending last season.

Genge is looking forward to taking on the guidance role, they kicked off their new game against the Exeter Chiefs on September 18.

The England man wrote on Twitter: "Thank you for all the lovely messages. The previous English hooker Youngs retired from this role at the end of last season.

“Over the past five seasons, I have learned a lot from young people, which will help me on this path, both on and off the field. I will do my greatest to donate to the great history of this club."
