Williams appeared for the Barbarians against Australia in Sydney during his stay in Toulon, but his long-awaited entry into the full test arena with All Blacks arrived at Twickenham 17 months later. In this area, he became the first player in nearly 90 years to represent New Zealand in the Union, having already done so in the league.

And All Blacks fans had to wait just over 16 minutes to see what Williams could add to the team when he scored two midfield hits and delivered a skilful shock to Jerome Cain in support. Kaino stretched the ball back at Hosea Gear and New Zealand was on the first attempt of the match.

It was a trick Williams almost repeated in the second half, when he shrugged off the attentions of Mike Tindall and Shontayne Hape, but the All Blacks failed to capitalize. New Zealand won the match by 10 points and therefore the following week Williams was named player of the match as Scotland beat them 49-3 at Murray field. NEW ZEALAND 22-0 AUSTRALIA, 25 AUGUST, EDEN PARK, 2012

With Williams’ first contract with New Zealand rugby in a brazen manner, the center was beginning to have a growing influence on the team. He began all three tests against Ireland in June, scoring in the third when tourists beat Hamilton 60-0. Williams, however, saved his best performance in the end, after a late call-up to All Blacks for the first two Bledisloe Cup matches against Australia.

Williams had already committed to play in Japan before returning to rugby league when his All Blacks contract expired, but in victories against the Wallabies, his form indicated that he was currently settling on the team. At Eden Park on August 25, 2012, Williams made 71 meters, beating four defenders and providing six out-of-the-ordinary performances.

NEW ZEALAND 34-17 AUSTRALIA, 31 OCTOBER, TWICKENHAM, 2015

Williams was once again used primarily as a replacement during the All Blacks race to the 2015 Rugby World Cup final, as he started only two of his team’s seven matches. In the final, he replaced Conrad Smith at half-time and became involved almost immediately when his download found his centre mate Noun, who danced through the Wallabies defender and over the goal line from 45 meters away.

Australia again reduced its deficit to 21-17 at one stage, but Williams played his role in the renaissance All Blacks. He also showed his willingness to play; throwing a shock of a tackle at Ben Smith when time ran out, which the side happily kicked in touch to finish the game.

After the final beep, Williams gave the winner’s medal to a young fan, Charlie Line, while trying to enter Twickenham’s turf.

NEW ZEALAND 40-17 WALES, 1 NOVEMBER, TOKYO STADIUM, 2019

Four years later, Williams last appeared in the famous black jersey and helped New Zealand win the 2019 RWC bronze final against Wales. In the 42nd minute, the fans treated themselves to a classic piece of Williams’ play when he absorbed the interventions of Owen Watkins and Jonathan Davies and still managed to find the perfect pass to Ryan Crotty from the outside.

That try helped give All Blacks a 35-10 lead on the night and ensured Williams would finish his Test career with another medal around his neck. He ended his international career after scoring 13 goals in his last 58 All Blacks, 52 of which he won.
