Anthony Joshua v Tyson Fury: Wilder arbitration casts doubt over Saudi Arabia bout

Tyson Fury has ordered to fight Deontay Wilder for the third time. This calls into question the proposed August super fight with Anthony Joshua. Fury, 32, won the WBC heavyweight championship from Wilder in a rethink in February 2020 after an opening draw. The pair would fight again, but delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic prompted Fury to seem for an alternate. A U.S. judge ruled during a mediation Monday. That Wilder has the proper to face Fury for the third time before September 15. The U.S. team has long argued that their fighter has a contractual right to a third fight with Fury.

But after delays caused by the pandemic led to the postponement of the match in July 2020. Wilder’s team tried to move the match to 2021.

Fury rejected the 2021 date and said he would advance. This triggered mediation under the supervision of U.S. Judge Daniel Weinstein, who now sidelined with Wilder and set a September 15 deadline for a third fight.

“Until we make a deal with Deontay Wilder’s people, I can’t say [Fury’s fight with Joshua] is definitely going to happen,” Fury promoter Frank Warren said on BBC Radio 4’s Today program.

“But we’re working hard to get over it. We spoke last night, and hopefully, we can do that. If not, then Tyson, if he so desires, will go into battle with Wilder. They’re the only two options.”

Fury’s US promoters Top Rank wouldn’t discuss the event when contacted by BBC Sport.

“We don’t pay Wilder to step aside,” said Arum. “It’s better to urge obviate him and set about our business. We will make the Fury-Joshua fight for November or December.”

Just 24 hours before Monday’s arbitration hearing. Fury confirmed that he had agreed to fight fellow Brit Joshua – the IBF, WBA. And WBO belt holder – for all four world heavyweight titles in Saudi Arabia on August 14.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn also said several times that the August attack was in place, with terms agreed. The mediation outcome doesn’t necessarily mean a Fury-Joshua fight can’t take place in August. But fresh deals will now have to struck to do so.

That could mean Wilder offered money to permit Fury-Joshua to require a place. “It would cost quite a little bit of money. He’ll want the maximum amount possible. So I feel it’ll be about the negotiation if we go down that path,” said Warren.

Saudi authorities are reportedly sitting around £106m ahead just to set up the Fury-Joshua match. Pay-per-view sales and ticket sales will serve to add significantly to the total revenue of the match. If it continues, Joshua versus Fury is going to be the primary bout in heavyweight history. Where all four world titles are at stake.
