NFL London 2021: Jaguars coach George Warhop tasked with improving offensive line’s pass protection
When Urban Meyer wanted to fill the vacancies of the Jaguars’ coaching staff nearly six months ago, he set the bar high for the required qualities. He was looking for coaches for the pack, experts in the positions they trained, regardless of whether they had been at a collegiate or professional level before. “There were different conversations in every place,” Meyer said. ”Expertise is what I want to say. I think 904 deserve the best.
For one of the most critical positions on his team, Meyer doesn’t have to look far to find his best pick for offensive line coach. He hired the same guy who coached the unit the past two seasons – George Warhop. The NFL London fans can also buy Atlanta Falcons vs New York Jets tickets 2021 from our website.
He is one of four employees of former coach Doug Marrone, including assistant coach Tony Gilbert, secondary coach (cornerbacks) Tim Walton and Nickel Corners coach Joe Danny. After allowing 44 sacks last season to equal the Dallas Cowboys’ seventh-place record in the NFL, Meyer confides in Warhop, as does Marrone. But Meyer wants better production.
Most importantly, protect Trevor Lawrence, their prized rookie quarterback.
The Jaguars hope the continuity of all five starters — forwards Cam Robinson and Jawaan Taylor, defenseman Andrew Norwell and A.J. Cann and center Brandon Linder — will be the difference this time. The fans can also buy Jacksonville Jaguars vs Miami Dolphins tickets from our website.
But the unit has allowed 86 sacks in the last two seasons under Warhop.
“Competition brings out the best in all of them, and I look at our offensive line as very talented people,” Meyer said. “We decided to go with the starting five we had. We have other young players who I know warhop has high standards. I believe we have a coach and I believe we have great talent, that we will play much better.”
Last year, the Jaguars took a chance and drafted former Division III defenseman Ben Bartch of St. John’s University in Minnesota in the fourth round. Bartch still has a lot to do for his development, but as a rookie he showed promise in limited representative ranks.
In April, the Jaguars took another chance and selected former Stanford forward Walker little in the second round. At 6 feet-7, 325 pounds, little meets all measurable. Since 2019, however, he has played only one game.
He was dropped from playing for the Cardinal last season due to COVID-19 measures. He missed all games of the 2019 season because of a left knee injury. One of Warhop’s critical tasks will be directing Little’s NFL transition so he can make a possible contribution as a rookie.
Warhop loved what he saw of Little during the offseason program, but a much better evaluation is ahead of training camp when the pads stand up for live contact work.
“First of all, Walker, he’s a really good athlete,” Warhop said. ”And of all the guys out there, when you see him play, he’s got incredible flexibility, he can really bend. He’s a smooth pass blocker. I had multiple tackles made in the first or second round and [Walker Little] came in as prepared or more prepared than any of those guys; in terms of movement skills, in terms of intellect, in terms of communication.”
