Katie Grims, Swimming Athletics

What did you do when you were 15 years old? One lane over from Katie Ledecky in the 800m freestyle final at the Olympic was Katie Grimes.

We had a glimpse of the future swimming star of the United States, Grimes, in Tokyo this year. In the preliminary rounds, she had the second-fastest time and finished just two seconds behind Ledecky. Grimes later placed fourth in the 800m final, outpacing a number of seasoned swimmers, and was just 1.03 seconds away from taking the top spot. We recognized the potential, and Ledecky obviously did too, as well, as she referred to the two of them as.

“Katie squared” after the U.S. Olympic Trials and informed her that she is “the now” in American swimming.

The Olympic Paris Games in Paris may serve as a coming-out celebration for the adolescent who received her first cell phone only because she had to fly halfway around the world to compete.

Last Olympic competition

She won her last Olympic competition, the women’s 800-meter freestyle, on Saturday in Tokyo. Ledecky, who finished in 8:12.57, beat Ariarne Titmus, who had earlier delivered Ledecky her first-ever solo Olympic loss, by 1.26 seconds. She now has 10 Olympic medals seven gold medal to her name and is the fourth swimmer in history to win back-to-back-to-back Olympic golds in a single event.

Starting with the 8:04.79 world record she achieved at the Rio Olympics, Ledecky has the best 23 times in the event’s history. Today’s 8:13.83 by Titmus is the fastest time recorded by a non-Ledecky athlete.

When asked if it was her final Olympic swim, Ledecky responded: “Well, I went swimming again soon. I will at least attend 24. Perhaps in ’28; we’ll see.”

Ledecky won the 1500-meter freestyle event two days earlier, becoming the first woman to do it, but her time was 15 seconds slower than it should have been. She came second to Titmus in the 400 free, her first individual competition of the Games, and then finished fifth in the 200 just before the 1500.

In the second-fastest relay split in history, Ledecky stormed back to spearhead the American women’s 4×200 free relay, passing the Australian team to take second place behind China.

The 15-year-old Katie Grimes, who shocked the American swimming community by finishing second to Ledecky at the U.S. Olympic Trials in June, also competed in the 800 final and placed fourth in 8:19.38.

Ledecky was hoping for a historic women’s mid-distance and distance freestyle sweep going into Tokyo, but it was not to be.

Katie Ledecky destroys the competition to win the first women’s 1500 gold medal at the Olympics. The women’s 1500m freestyle was formally recognised as an Olympic event in June 2017, with competition set to begin in Tokyo. This announcement finally brought gender equality to distance swimming.

Even then, even after an additional year, it was clear who would win the inaugural Olympic gold medal. The sole query? How much more.
The obvious choice Katie Ledecky. 4.13 seconds separate the two. Her advantage was about two seconds after 500 metres. Almost 4 at the kilometre. If it ever truly wasn’t, it was over by that point. Each stroke is identical to the previous one. Elegance and power for the whole quarter hour.
Never mind that Ledecky’s winning time, 15:37.34, was a full “Happy Birthday” verse off her own world record of 15:20:48 set at a Pro Series meet in 2018. For once, the Olympic record mattered more.

“I simply wanted to get the job done tonight. “I just consider all the outstanding female swimmers the United States has produced who never had the chance to compete in that event.”

AFTER THE HISTORIC RACE, LEDECKY REMARKED

As the race came to a close, she smacked the water in joy—but not for herself. To Ledecky’s delight, teammate Erica Sullivan won the silver medal in 15:41.41.

Sullivan

The 20-year-old Sullivan, a seasoned open-water expert who has excelled in the pool over the past two years, has now knocked 20 seconds off the personal best time of 16:01.71 she had when she entered the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in June.

With six lengths left to go, Sullivan was out of contention for a medal, but she kept Ledecky in sight as she overtook Wang Jianjiahe of China and Sarah Kohler of Germany for the bronze.

At one point, only Katie could be seen ahead of Sullivan, who recalled this.

“Seeing someone you’ve looked up to for years and seeing them a few meters in front of you, and using that to get home, really gave me that energy” .

SHE SAID

In isolation, Ledecky’s triumph was stunning enough. When considered in its entirety, it almost defies understanding. Little over an hour had passed since Ledecky had participated in the women’s 200m freestyle final. Because swimmers aren’t anticipated to be proficient enough over such a wide range of distances to participate in both, the two events are held on the same day. The one exception was Ledecky, who placed fifth in the race won by Ariarne Titmus of Australia.

For the first time males eligible to compete in Olympic Artistic Swimming competition

Moreover, Titmus defeated Ledecky in the 400 free two days earlier. Ledecky seemed unfazed after Wednesday’s competition despite losing her flawless record in individual Olympic competition.

Ledecky stated, “I suppose people might feel horrible for me because I’m not always winning, but I want people to be more concerned about other things going on in the world where people are actually suffering.”I’m just happy to bring Team USA home a gold medal,”
